Quick answerThrough any decent telescope, a bright Moon is dazzling. A Moon filter threads onto your eyepiece and dims it so the craters stand out. Celestron makes a simple fixed filter, a variable one you twist from 1 to 40% transmission, and a set of 13%, 25% and 50% ND filters, per the listings. Important: a Moon filter is not a solar filter. Never use one on the Sun.

Your first look at a gibbous Moon through a telescope can be almost too bright. A Moon filter is a small, cheap fix. Product details are from the listings; we haven't tested them.

Not for the Sun. The American Astronomical Society says solar filters "designed to thread into an eyepiece at the back end of the telescope ... are dangerous." A Moon filter threads into the eyepiece and blocks far too little light. For the Sun, use a front-mounted filter made for solar viewing: see solar filters.

Tips

  • The Moon is often most dramatic near first or last quarter, when shadows along the terminator show crater depth.
