Quick answerA GoTo telescope has motors and a computer that slew to whatever you pick and keep it centered. Celestron's NexStar 6SE and 8SE are the classic examples, with a 40,000+ object database, per the listing. Sky-Watcher's Virtuoso GTi puts Wi-Fi GoTo on a collapsible tabletop Dob. If you just want help finding things without motors or batteries, Celestron's StarSense Explorer scopes use your phone instead.

"Computerized" covers two quite different ideas. Some scopes move themselves; others just tell you where to move them. Here's the difference, with specs from Celestron's pages and the listings. We haven't tested these.

Motorized GoTo vs app-guided

  • GoTo: Celestron's glossary says these "automatically point" at the objects you choose "and track them as they appear to move across the sky." They need power and a short alignment.
  • App-guided (StarSense Explorer): manual mounts. The phone app recognizes the star pattern overhead, then on-screen arrows guide you until "the bullseye turns green," per the listing. No motors, no tracking.
